Grilling with Charcoal Grills

Grilled food is one of the healthiest ways to cook and there are different types of grills available. Charcoal grills use charcoal briquettes or all natural lump coal as fuel to provide the heat for cooking. There are people who love cooking on charcoal grills but there is a difference of opinion between those that use charcoal briquettes and those that use lump coal. Users of charcoal briquettes like the uniformity of size of the briquettes, the heat emitted by them, the burn rate and the quality of food that can be produced using these briquettes. Users of charcoal lumps on the other hand prefer the smokiness and aroma, the high heat that this fuel provides and the lack of fillers and binders that are usually associated with briquettes.

Types of Charcoal Grills

Charcoal grills come in a wide range of shapes, you can get round grills, square grills, rectangle grills some of these grills have lids and some do not. Some of these grills have venting systems while others do not. The simplest and cheapest charcoal grills are the brazier type of charcoal grills. Pellet grills use compressed hardwood pellets. These pellets are available in different types of wood like maple, oak, hickory, apple, mesquite, grapevine and others each of these adding their special flavors to the food being cooked. These pellet grills are popular with people who like to smoke briskets, hams and ribs. The square charcoal grills have shallow pans and have an easy way to adjust the heat, many of these grills have lids which allow you to smoke food as well as do simple grilling. These types of grills are a bit more expensive than other charcoal grills.

Cooking On Charcoal Grills

Controlling the temperature on charcoal grills is a bit more harder than other types of grills. The food needs to be constantly watched to see that the temperature does not get too high or too low. Using these grills needs a bit more skill than using other types of grills. You can cook all food on this type of grill and an added advantage is that you can not only cook the food in different flavors but you can also smoke foods. The problem with these types of grills is that they emit a great deal of exhaust which is harmful for the environment. So when using these grills you need a lot of room for the exhaust gases to be emitted in the air.

Charcoal grills need a bit of maintenance since the charcoal can be used only once and the used charcoal has to be disposed. While using these types of grills you need to have big bags of the type of charcoal you are going to be using. .
